About Justin

A little about me

I’m Justin Reid — a writer, teacher, coach, and incurably curious person based in the Bay Area.

This website is partly about my professional work, but it’s also a place to explore the ideas, questions, projects, and occasional creative meanderings that have captured my attention.

I’m interested in how people heal, adapt, grow, perform, create, and find a deeper sense of fulfillment. That curiosity has taken me through physiology and neuroscience, biofeedback and breath, mythology and philosophy, grief and resilience, endurance and fitness, music, culture, and the strange patterns that seem to connect things that initially appear unrelated.

I suppose the common thread is an interest in what helps life work well — and what gets in the way.

An orientation

Growth isn't linear. It unfolds through rhythms, cycles, disruptions, returns, and development.

That idea runs through much of what I do.

The nervous system is rhythmic. Training is rhythmic. Learning is rhythmic. Creativity is rhythmic. Grief certainly is. Even our attempts to make sense of ourselves seem to involve wandering away, discovering something, and returning with a slightly different view.

I’m interested in the conditions that allow those processes to unfold — rather than simply trying to force an outcome.

That means paying attention to signal amid the noise, respecting what physiology can teach us, remaining open to what it can't fully explain, and occasionally questioning ideas we've become a little too certain about.

How I work

My professional work begins with physiology — the nervous system, breath, and body as foundations of experience.

From there, things become more individual.

For some people, the work involves biofeedback and neurotechnology. For others, coaching through grief, change, performance, or a period of transition. Often it's some combination, chosen together and adjusted as we learn more.

I'm less interested in imposing a single method than in understanding the person in front of me and asking a more useful question:

What is trying to develop here, and what might help?

What I write about

Almost anything that seems worth understanding.

Science, physiology, resilience, mythology, culture, fitness, grief, meaning, creativity, performance, music, and the possible signal underneath all the noise.

Sometimes I try to make complicated scientific ideas more digestible. Sometimes I follow connections across disciplines. Sometimes an ancient philosopher has something surprisingly useful to say about modern life.

And sometimes I just write because something caught my attention and I want to follow it for a while.

My essays and creative wanderings live on my Substack, Unified Wisdom.

A bit of background

I hold an M.S. in Psychophysiology and am Board Certified in Neurofeedback (BCN-P).

I didn't arrive here through a particularly straight path. I came to psychophysiology after losing my wife, when questions about regulation, resilience, and how human beings adapt stopped being merely intellectual. My curiosity has also been personal — exploring how physiology, attention, and nervous-system regulation can influence challenges within my own body.

That experience deepened an inquiry that continues today — professionally, scientifically, philosophically, and personally.

I founded Neuro Rhythms in the Bay Area and am also involved in developing accessible biofeedback technology and creating coaching programs that support growth, performance, and a deeper sense of fulfillment.

Alongside that work, I write, teach, make music, spend a fair amount of time moving through the mountains, and do my best as a widowed father to raise two boys — all while continuing to follow ideas wherever they happen to lead.

That's really what this website is about.

Come explore

Read something. Question something. Follow a rabbit hole.

If something here sparks an idea, helps you see something differently, or makes you curious enough to keep exploring, then the site has probably done its job.

And if you'd like to work together, collaborate, or simply start a conversation, you're welcome to get in touch.

Connect with the Rhythm

If you're interested in coaching, biofeedback, or collaborating around writing and ideas, I'd be glad to connect and see what we might explore together.
